the terroir
From a geological perspective, the soils at Château Fougas are formed of water-borne and windblown colluvium. Blue and red iron-rich clay ( smectite) coupled with sand and gravel lay on top of a limestone bedrock of Fronsac molasse.
This particularly fine smectite clay at ground level imparts freshness, suppleness and refined tannins to the wines, whilst a limestone bedrock brings balance.
The topography is also extremely interesting: Château Fougas is located on a plateau and enjoys natural water drainage due to two small streams situated below, at the farthest eastern and westernmost points.
